They recognize meta-theoretical premises of political theory by scientific contextualization of key concepts. They can link historic and theoretical perspectives and are because of their dealing with theories on citizenship and human rights, social movements and publics, justice, peace and democracy, migration and globalization, political subjectiveness and power of action, injustice and representation as well as state and government able to work on and explain processes of political significance.
From Immanuel Kant to Gustavo Esteva, from Thomas Hobbes to Ivan Illich, John Paul Lederach and beyond: This seminar will engage with key texts around the political ideas of peace and its strongly related concept of development. In the first part of the course we will develop a solid theoretical fundament within the fields peace and development theories. In the second part of this course we will apply those theories to a vairety of cases of contemporary peace and development processes, with a particular focus on the Middle East and North Africa region. After a successful completion of this course, students will know the variety of key texts within the fields of peace and development reserach. They will be able to independently apply their newly acquired theoretical lenses to selected cases. Furthermore, they will have developed their academic writing skills further and they will have improved their academic presentation and feedback skills.
Classroom discussions, readings, paper-writing, peer-feedback
Smaller assignments throughout the semester, as well as oral presentations and a final course paper.
