Ability to describe literary, historical and cultural contexts of representative authors,  works and genres of literature and their canonization; you can describe the interaction of social, literary and cultural history; interpretation of literary texts according to scientific standards.

To appoint craft, literary and cultural historical contexts the example of representative authors works and genres to describe canonization; they can describe developments the interaction of social, literary and cultural history (among other things gender-specific); they have the skill to interpret literary texts independently according to scientific standards.

Using L. Tieck, H. v. Kleist, A. Stifter, A. v. Droste-Hülshoff, G. Keller, Th. Storm, K.E. Franzos, F. v. Saar, G. Benn as examples, this course offers an overview of the form and themes of novella writing starting with the period of Romanticism and leading up to the modern age. An introduction to the genre will be followed by the analysis of prose texts founded on theoretical and methodological reflection, which serves as the point of departure for interpretative hypotheses and the contextualization of the texts in social and literary history.

Intensive reading and formal analysis; placement in the literary-historical context and critical review of central themes; oral exam at the end of the semester (knowledge of the novels, who we read)

Familiarity with texts, presentations and participation in discussions, written paper (ca. 12 p.).
