Students will be familiar with the major theoretical frameworks for World Englishes. They will be able to identify and analyse variation at different structural levels and contextualise this variation in the larger field of World Englishes.

While World Englishes may, technically, refer to any variety of English that can be found around the globe, this seminar will mainly focus on those forms of English that are the more or less direct result of colonialism (also called New Englishes). In this seminar, we will discuss the two dominant theoretical approaches to these varieties of English, as well as additions to and criticism of these frameworks. Having established a first theoretical basis, we will then go on a linguistic world tour and examine, present and discuss examples of variation from different levels of language (phonology, syntax, morphology) and a wide number of different Englishes. Whereas this seminar aims at providing a cross-section of different varieties of English, special focus will lie on (South) African Englishes.
