Familiarization with the basic concepts and the core of Italian linguistics, illustrated by concrete examples.

The following topics will be presented and discussed: the functions of language, Italian language as a Romance language; Italian phonology and phonetics; Italian morphology and word-formation; Italian lexicology and semantics.

The material is presented and illustrated by concrete examples of Italian. There will be enough time for discussing the relevant contents.

A midterm written exam and in the last week a final written exam; the active participation during the course will be considered.

 

For each new area texts are distributed in time; further reading will be announced at the beginning of the semester.

It is recommended to attend the course at the earliest at the beginning of the language courses of level B1, ideally after their completion.
