The hadith (´ilm al-hadith) therefore forms a central theme of classical Islamic sciences. In this seminar at first it will be given an overview of the chronological development of the Hadith, from the earliest oral tradition sayings of the Prophet to the canonical collections. This is followed by an introduction to plug into the science of Usul al-hadith (Hadith methodology) which deals mainly with the question of the authenticity of traditions. Another focus is the educational value of the Hadith. It goes particularly to the didactic and methodological criteria for the selection and use of hadiths in Islamic religious instruction.
