Corpus linguistics is concerned with investigating linguistic data automatically and has become an important tool in linguistics and especially in computer linguistics. The term corpora (sg. corpus) in this context means collections of naturally occuring language, ie texts, which were created in a real social context and provide empirical material for linguistic research. How and according to which criteria on can compile a corpus and how to query it will be explained with some examples. Additionally we will present some existing text corpora and demonstrate which new exciting possibilities corpus linguistics opens up.
