706018 VO Physics versus science fiction
summer semester 2018 | Last update: 18.06.2018 | Place course on memo listUniv.-Prof. Dr. Olaf Reimer Univ.-Prof. Dr. Olaf Reimer, +43 512 507 52060
After finishing this course, participants should be able to identify and
analyse (qualitatively and quantitatively) the relevant physical
processes in everyday and fictional situations. For this the
'Fermi-problem' will be used, a quantitative estimate for a problem
where insufficient data are available.
In this course different situations from science-fiction literature and
motion pictures will be presented and analysed. The degree of realism
for such situations will be discussed using fundamental physical
quantities and conservation laws. The discussion will be extended and
investigated quantitatively using the related physical description from
the fields of astrophysics, relativity, plasmaphysics, etc. Typical
examples include: Energy and angular-momentum conservation, artificial
gravity, motion of space vessels near the speed of light, propagation of
sound in the space environment, etc.
