Knowledge of principles in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is transferred to students for understanding molecular processes of life with an emphasis on pharmaceutical and medical aspects. The students learn the basics of physiological, biochemical, and cell biological processes including pathophysiological changes leading to prevalent human diseases. They will study important microbiological laboratory techniques and diagnostic procedures, and will experience to apply them in subsequent practical courses.

Biochemistry and pathobiochemistry of humans, molecular building blocks and processes of life, molecular genetics.

  • Molecular basis of life: chemical components of the cell, amino acids and peptides, protein structure and function, protein chemistry and proteomics, nucleotides and nucleic acids, evolution and bioinformatics, vitamins and coenzymes, enzymes and inhibitors, lipids and biomembranes, carbohydrates and glycosylation
  • Generation and storage of metabolic energy: metabolic principles, glycolysis, gluconeogenesis, citric acid cycle, oxidative phosphorylation, photosynthesis, pentose phosphate pathway, glycogen metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, amino acid metabolism, nucleotide metabolism, synthesis of membrane lipids, steroid metabolism
  • Molecular biology and complex biological systems: DNA replication and repair, DNA recombination, RNA synthesis, protein biosynthesis, gene expression control, gene technology, signal transduction, sensory systems, immune system, molecular motors, drug development
