summer semester 2018 | Last update: 24.04.2018 | Place course on memo listThe course provides students with an overview of the most important social and cultural aspects of 18th and 19th century architecture and urban planning in Europe and the USA.
The students develop skills on how to derive critical analyses, theoretical strands or approaches from the presented positions.
The course is designed against the background of the European Council Directive (85/384/EEC), Article 3. This is about studying architecture:
„Education and training leading to diplomas, certificates and other evidence of formal qualifications referred to in Article 2 shall be provided through courses of studies at university level concerned principally with architecture. Such studies shall be balanced between the theoretical and practical aspects of architectural training and shall ensure the acquisition of:
1. an ability to create architectural designs that satisfy both aesthetic and technical requirements,
2. an adequate knowledge of the history and theories of architecture and the related arts, technologies and human sciences,
3. a knowledge of the fine arts as an influence on the quality of architectural design,
etc.“
Each lecture is dedicated to a specific topic, e. g."Take-off","Americanness","Bentham's panopticon", etc.
Presentation of the respective theme and the most important participants in the respective discourse in connection with the corresponding major works, the main features and stations of their reception. Development of a fondamental base for the development of critical analyses and possible interpretations in architectural theory.
Lecture: The regular attendance of the lectures is strongly recommended!
Assessment based on a single examination act at the end of the course
Written, electronic examination procedure in the form of a single-choice test
