The meaning of sex intervenes in all areas of life, society, culture and science. After an introduction about the development of cross-sectional gender studies from the women's movement and examples of gender mainstreaming in urban planning and urban development (eg Handbook Gender Mainstreaming in Urban Planning and Urban Development, Vienna 2013, http://www.wien.gv.at/stadtentwicklung /studien/pdf/b008290.pdf), selected texts are presented, discussed and analyzed. The focus here lies on important philosophical, sociological and political scientific theses, queer theory and architectural and art theoretical discussions, on questions of gender-sensitive planning with consideration of ethnic group and social class and a critical debate on the efficiency of gender mainstreaming in practice including the discussion of current topics such as "Antigenderism" and #MeToo.
