Intimate knowledge of practical philosophy with a special emphasis on legal philosophy; advanced philosophical reasoning; interdisciplinary competence

On the occasion of the 70th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide, this seminar aims at interdisciplinary analysis of genocide, the so-called "crime of crimes". We will focus in particular on the following issues: the concept and definition of genocide (How does genocide differ from mass murder? What is genocidal intent? What is a people for the purposes?); cases of genocide past and present (Philippines, Namibia, Armenians, Former Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Syria, Myanmar,...); radical evil; ideologies of dehumanization; international prosecution of genocide; genocide as justification/pretense for the use of force. Special emphasis will be laid on the exchange of philosophical and legal perspectives.
