PS Economic and Social History: Global Entanglements
PS 2
4,5
The lecture is principally open for all those interested, crucial prerequisite for participation in the proseminar are interest in the topic and openness for an interdisciplinary approach. The whole module is generally open to students also from other programmes than economics. For reasons of fairness and because of its interdisciplinary character, formal pre-requisites ("Theory of Economic Decisions 1" and "Fundamentals of Macroeconomic Activity") are thus only relevant in case of over-booking.

Ability for deepened explanation of selected topics of economic and social history including a historically grounded analysis of the present.

Why are some societies extremely poor, while others are very rich? Why have some succeeded in developing into open, democratic market economies, while others seem to be captured in civil wars and other crisis? Departing from these questions, selected aspects of global polit-economic connections in history and at present will be discussed from an economic and social historical perspective. Especially in focus is the explanation of internal and external factors for the "development" of societies and economies.

Input by the instructor, written PS-paper (country case study), presentations by students (of the study as well as a theoretical input), possibly in group work.

oral (presentations, collaboration) and written (PS-paper)

Crucial prerequisite for participation are interest in the topic and openness for an interdisciplinary approach. Participation in the connected lecture is recommended (and necessary if the whole module is to be completed).

Students from programmes other than economics, especially from sociology, political science and history, are explicitly welcome due to the interdisciplinary character of the course. In these cases, enrollment for the PS will also be possible online, but a later enrollment in person in the first unit at October 2 is also likely to be possible (admission subject to available course spots)!
