PS Modern German Literature I: Prose of the Weimar Republic

The students can elucidate literary and historico-cultural correlations based on examples from representative authors, works and genres; they can describe canonisation processes; they can explain the concurrence of social, literary and historico-cultural (incl. gender specific) developments; they are proficient in independently interpreting literary texts in keeping with standard academic practice.

Analysis and interpretation from fictional and non-fictional works (reportage) from E.M. Remarque, J. Roth, E. Kästner, Irmgard Keun, Vicki Baum, A. Seghers and other writers from the Weimar Republic and the period between the world wars. To be central themes as First World War, process of urbanisation, USA, sport, crime, media (film), Neue Frau, leisure time, socialism and National Socialism and the aesthetic of the 'Neue Sachlichkeit'.


Introduction given by members of teaching staff, presentation, team work, plenary discussion, close reading

Presentations at course, Seminar Paper (15 pages). Oral cooperation, oral examination at the finish of semester
