The students gain insights into the theories and methods of Digital Humanities; through practical exercises, the contents can be applied and critically reflected.

The course offers an introduction to the wide field of Digital Humanities. Starting from a historical outline, the conceptual basics of DH will be worked out as well as relevant theories and methods will be presented. Practical examples of digital editing and digital archives deepen the understanding of processes of data modeling and data analysis as well as forms of representation of digital objects that are managed and conveyed by science, archives and libraries. Finally, chances and risks for cultural studies, that come along with the “digital turn”, will be discussed.
