609771 Synchronic and/or Diachronic English Linguistics: Continuations: diachronic and synchronic perspectives on text and context then and now
winter semester 2018/2019 | Last update: 01.12.2021 | Place course on memo listThis seminar offers diachronic and synchronic as well as contrastive insights into text, cotrext and context
TEXT and CO(N)TEXT are inherently dependant upon each other and so are e.g. SYNCHRONICITY and DIACHRONICITY. All of these conceptual categories are inseparably linked through causal relations and can never be considered individually: no research into a medieval text without modern deliberation and evaluation and no synchronic status quo without consideration of the earlier stages a language went through.
In this seminar a set of heterogenously contrastive case studies then and now (rather than ‘versus’!) will be focused upon. Text types, genres, concepts and categories will be paralleled and elaborated upon in both medieval as well as modern texts. The broad textual range will cover forensic protocols as well as marginalia in manuscripts up to graffiti and hypertext, to name just a few. We shall thereby for instance discuss whether the modern notion ‘text’ and its conceptual features, particularly its formal and functional characteristics, can be applied to phenomena up till 1500 years older than texts we face today.
Discussions, group work, presentations, seminar paper
(1) 1 oral presentation
(2) Instead of a conventional term paper, you will compose a portfolio of 4 components throughout the semester, by which you can immediately apply what you have learned. This way, you will be hands-on involved and challenged throughout the semester and done by the end of it.
Will be provided in class.
