Participants will gain a deeper understanding of the role of conceptual metaphors in reconstruction and deconstruction of certain discourse types.

Metaphor studies within Cognitive Linguistics (CL) mainly focus on the role of conceptual metaphors in constructing cognition. Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) emphasizes the role of ideology and power in discourse. The objective of this seminar is to explore the common grounds of the two fields. CDA offers a critical dimension to the identification and interpretation of metaphors. Moreover, the application of theories and analytical tools, such as conceptual metaphor, conceptual metonymy and conceptual blending, developed within CL to CDA underlines the oft-neglected concern with the conceptual structures behind discourse.

The instructor will provide an overview of the theories and methods relevant to the content of the seminar in the first few sessions.

Regular attendance (attendance to the 1st session is compulsory), participation in discussions, oral presentation, seminar paper and other assignments.
