609773 Systemic and/or Applied English Linguistics: Sociolinguistics: Language and Socialization
winter semester 2018/2019 | Last update: 01.10.2019 | Place course on memo listUnderstanding of the nature and dimensions of language knowledge. Improvement of the student‘s knowledge of the English language in all of its aspects
The proseminar will concentrate on the question of what we mean by knowing or learning a language? What does being able to speak a language comprise?
What types of knowledge are required, i.e., declarative knowledge, procedural knowldge, metalinguistic knowledge?
How do skills, competence and proficiency relate?
It is suggested that a command of English probably requires lexical knowledge, orthographic knowledge, grammatical knowledge, semantic knowledge, pragmatic knowledge, morphological knowledge etc. It requires knowledge of items and principles, but also a knowledge of procedures such as derivational procedures, phonetic rather than phonemic rules, knowledge of standards and variation.
Finally, we shall address the question of how to assess and test language knowledge.
