609791 British and/or Postcolonial Literature: Invisible Hands, Impulsive Hearts: Economics and Sensibility in the 18th-Century Novel
winter semester 2018/2019 | Last update: 04.08.2021 | Place course on memo list
Gaining insights into 18th-century literature and culture; learning to combine methods of cultural and literary analysis; becoming familiar with 19th-century emotional history and the history of knowledge
This seminar deals with two areas in 18th-century literature that couldn't be more different - at first sight: the realm of sensibility (impulsive hearts) and the field of economics (invisible hands). It analyses both the culture of sensibility that came to shape a particular version of the sentimental novel, epitomised by Lawrence Sterne's Sentimental Journey, and the emerging economic discourse of such novels as Daniel Defoe's Robinson Crusoe and Moll Flanders. Students should be prepared to work on both theoretical writings from the 18th century and close readings of selected novels.
