For most people there is hardly any way of getting to know royalty except through media representations. And yet, we seem strangely familiar with their every-day lives, or what we assume them to be – wilfully ignoring the fact that how we perceive royalty is most often the product of a carefully staged performance. This staging is also the topic of literary and filmic productions that repeatedly attempt to imagine what royal lives are ‘really’ like, beyond the official image that is mediated. In the course of this seminar we will explore these very intersections of royal representations in the media, literature and film.
