611225 History of Italian Literature and Culture II (with Reading List)
winter semester 2018/2019 | Last update: 16.01.2019 | Place course on memo listBeginning with the definitions of literary classicism with regard to its big reference point, Classical Antiquity, we will investigate its most important manifestations in time: from the forerunners of Humanism in the fourteenth century to its full bloom in the sixteenth, from Late Renaissance or Mannerism to the classicism of the Baroque period, from the Academy of Arcadia to the seventeenth and nineteenth-century Neoclassicism, ending up with an outlook to forms of classicism of the twentieth century.
The study of the chronological stages of literary classicism will be accompanied and completed by readings of core literature (Burckhardt, Burke, Hale, Binni, etc.) as well as fundamental works of poetics and literary examples.
The semester will conclude with a final written exam, but active participation during the lessons (with regard to the readings) will also be assessed.
