History of Spanish Literature and Culture (with Reading List)

Students will get more profound informations about the Romantic period in Spain, about different currents of Romanticism (Christian R. vs. Revolted R.), about important representativs and works.

First, we will deal with historic parameters which influenced the development of Spanish Romanticism (Napoleonic invasion, war of independence, Fernando VII, exile of many romantic authors). Second, the course will present different facetts of Romantic writings (christian R., revolted R., gothic tradition). Students will get to know typical figures (e.g. the pirate, Don Juan, Faust), motives and esthetic stratagies of Spanisch Romanticism. We will deal with narrative, drama and poetry.

Lecture; text analysis; discussion.

Small term papers; active participation in discussions; written exam at the end of the term.

A bibliography will be provided at the beginning of the term.
