Knowledge of the caracteristics of Latin American and Brasilian Avant-garde in the beginning of the 20th century. Retracing of the interaction of the isms from Europe to Latin America and back. Insight into selected literary movements on the continent such as Semana de arte moderna (Brasil), Martinfierrismo (Argentina), Diepalismo (Puerto Rico) etc.

The seminar will concentrate on the epoch of the avant-garde and its many varieties in Latin America: variations of Futurism, Dadaism, Surrealism. This literary movement plays with language, is disgusted by the past and tries to renew constantly the future. With this, authors of the vanguardias create funny, experimental texts such as Oswald de Andrade's Manifesto antropófago ("cannibal manifest"). But in spite of the evident irony in the texts, they express nonetheless a serious cause: the renewal of the Latin American identities as independent ones and as their own.

Presentation by the course teacher; short presentations by the students (on selected passages of the literary texts); discussion.
