The students have acquired a thorough knowledge of Marina Cvetaeva’s central works; they are proficient in major analytical approaches and methods of interpretation of literary texts.

Marina Cvetaeva (1892-1941) undoubtedly belongs to the most prominent poets of the early 20th century, the so-called Silver Age of Russian literature and has influenced numerous later Russian and non-Russian poets. The course pursues a twofold aim. The first is to acquaint ourselves with a broad range of texts belonging to different genres and periods of her work, The second aim is deepen and extend the knowledge of analytical approaches to literature, of different methods of interpretation. Thus, we will mainly look at Cvetaevas poetry (hereby focusing on her reflexion about the meaning and functions of poetry in general and her own status as a poet in Russian society), at prose (particularly the autobiographical short prose texts) and the epic poems.

In order to analyze this wide scope of very different texts, we will employ a range of methodical approaches, beginning with those developed by the Formal and Structural schools up to more recent theories (e.g. Gender Studies, theories of space). Theories of intertextuality will play a central role.
