Seminar in Literary Studies: The Village in Russian and Soviet Literature

Exemplary overview of the representations of the village world in Russian and Soviet literature from the 19th to the 20th century

The following aspects will be discussed:

Theories of literary realism; representation of the village in classical 19th century realism, criticism of the village world (e.g. by signs of the beginning modernisation, industrialisation, exploitation, impoverishment) but also idyll of the village; dissolution of the village at the beginning of the Soviet era especially in the context of the collectivization of agriculture, renaissance of the idyllic but also endangered village world in the derevenskaya proza.

The following texts will be examined: Aleksandr Radišcev "Putešestvie iz Peterburga v Moskvu", Turgenev "Zapiski ochotnika", Vasilij Slepcov " Vljadimirka i Kljaz’ma", Anton Čechov "Mužiki", Sergej Tret’jakov "Vyzov", Aleksandr Solženicyn "Matrenin dvor", Vasilij Šukšin "Selskie žiteli"

Input by the professor, student presentations and drafting exercises, discussion

Active participation in the discussion by the students, oral presentation and written, scientific seminar paper with corresponding research
