This course is designed to enable students to develop the necessary skills to translate technical texts on economics and business from English into German. Focuses will include researching and using correct technical terminology, developing students' background knowledge on economics, and translating texts to meet textual conventions in the target language.

We will analyse and translate a range of different texts on business and economics, focussing on terminological precison and consistency, nuances of meaning and cohesion, typical translation difficulties and common sources of error. Preparatory assignments will require students to read up on the economic issues addressed in each text.

Reading, research and translation assignments; use of parallel texts; compilation of glossaries; comparison and discussion of translations in class.

Mid-term test and final test; active participation in class and completion of all assignments.

Handouts and translation assignments will be available via OLAT. Students should be aware that it is essential to regularly read the business sections in German language newspapers as well as to read specialist magazines and newspapers in English (e.g. The Economist, The Financial Times) in order to develop the necessary background and language knowledge.

Participants must be enrolled in one of the master's degree programmes in translation studies.
