Acquisition of competences and a critical attitude in dealing with historical sources and representations of history as well as the ability to present the newly-acquired knowledge in oral and/or written form; acquisition of the competent use of relevant scientific methods.

Reading and evaluation of the historical sources and representations of the Jewish national movement (Zionism) and the creation of the state of Israel; identification of the scholarly formulation of questions in history, historical representation and narratives; reading and evaluation of historiographical texts and analysis of their suitability as historical sources.

Reading, oral presentations and handout, written paper, discussion; teacher's lecture.

Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, regular and active participation in discussions, oral presentation and handout, paper (max. 5 pages).

Theodor Herzl, Der Judenstaat, Leipzig-Wien 1896.

A selected reading-list will be provided at the start of the course.

Foreword and introduction of Herzl's Judenstaat (see: literature) must be read in preparation of the first lesson.

The course consists of 15 one-hour lessons. The first meeting of one hour is to discuss the organization and technical details, the rest of the course will be held in seven two-hour sessions. The exact meeting dates will be selected accordingly to group size and didactic requirements and will be announced by the lecturer in the 3rd session.
