The aim for the students is to attain a basic understanding of the sixth century and its sources. In doing so, students will have to make themselves comfortable with the necessary skills for historians, especially handouts and presentations, as well as detailed papers.

One main topic will be the historiographic records of this time (for example the works Procopius of Caesarea and John Malalas). The geographical focus will lie on the Eastern Roman Empire. Then we will have a look at the extremely complex problem of Justinianic Legislation and Compilation of existing Laws. If students are interested, we may go into neighbouring fields as well, looking at epigraphical, archaeological and numsimatic sources.

Combination of lecture, reading tasks and presentations of the participants

Participation in discussions, presentation (without assessment) and an essay (4-7 pages)

For preparation: Meier, Mischa, Justinian. Herrschaft, Reich und Religion, München 2004 (Reihe Beck Wissen)

Online registration required. Limited number of participants.
