The participants acquire an advanced basis for PhD research in the doctoral school "Atoms, Light & Molecules".

Advanced concepts and methods of AMO physics

In this course I will cover recent developments in experimental research on scattering dynamics in the sub-Kelvin regime. This field, generally called “Cold Chemistry” has seen a rapid rise in interest in the past years and has benefitted from numerous new developments that permit the production and complete control of atoms and molecules in the gas phase. The course will start with a review of motivations to study molecular interactions and collisions at low energies, and of technologies to control, slow, and cool molecules and ions. I will then review the different methods used in the past 5-10 years to study collisions and reactions between atoms, molecules, and ions in the energy range below 10 K, with a strong focus on neutral-neutral collisions in molecular beams

The students

* know the current state of the art in cold molecules and cold chemistry research

* know and understand the current experimental methods used to study molecular collision in the sub-Kelvin regime

* have an overview of the literature in this field of research
