Students will gain a broad insight into a range of scientific concepts and approaches to the topic.
Research into the multidimensional relationships between humans and animals has become a respected scientific discipline that is attracting a lot of attention. This interdisciplinary lecture series not only focuses on an issue that has been central to ecology, ethology, history, philosophy and ethics, but also one that is of increasing importance for the society. What the Human-Animal Studies are and what they are trying to uncover, will be shown exemplarily in lectures from a diversity of disciplines.
Lecture and discussion.
Written exam.The basis for the exam are the papers of the lectures and the following book (except the chapters 6 and 7): G. Kompatscher / R. Spannring / K. Schachinger, Human-Animal Studies. Eine Einführung für Studierende und Lehrende, mit Beiträgen von Reinhard Heuberger und Reinhard Margreiter. Münster / New York: utb / Waxmann 2017. 264 S.
For students of Teacher Training another arrangement applies: To get a mark, a written preparation of a teaching unit on Human-Animal Studies in the extent of 25 pages has to be submitted. Further details will be provided in the first lecture.

Recognition: The lecture series is open for BA Studies only; MA and PhD can’t obtain a mark. Nevertheless, all students are welcome as guest auditors. We recommend the lecture in particular to all students with the intent to write a thesis on Human-Animal Studies. If you are not sure if it would be recognized also by your discipline, please talk to your educational dean.
