Key aspect is to recognize the position of education between economic and emancipatory requirements and the political struggles in the field of education since the second halfe of the 19 century.
Against this background mechanisms of exclusion in view of gender, class and "race"/ethnicity should be discussed as well as approaches - of different political parties, unions and teacher's representatives - suited to overcomming these mechanisms.
Content of the course is the social selectivity of the Austrian educational system and the access to universities. In an historical perspective characteristics and problems of the educational system should be discussed with a focus on the access of first generation students. For this different categories (like gender, class and "race") and their interrelation should be discussed. Althoug the focus of the cours is on the access to higher education/universities, the lower educational levels are also part of the examination.
Introduction to the topic by the lecturer, elaboration of specific research questions by the students, discussions - also about recent debates in educational politics.
Constant participation, presentation of a topic, written paper.
