Christianity views the human person and his/her freedom in the polarity of personal and original sin on the one hand and divine grace on the other hand, and thus posits its own theological anthropology. How should we understand this polarity? Are human persons free? Or are conventional ideas of freedom to be questioned? What are “personal sin”, “original sin”, and “grace”? These questions will be addressed with special consideration of the theologies of Karl Rahner and Raymund Schwager because they have especially addressed the pertaining problems. In the process their theological anthropologies will be situated in the context of their thought and philosophical implications will be thematized.
