Knowledge in the field of the regulation of communication beyond the already sufficiently researched censorship.

"Fake News", "Hate speech" and their (intended) regulation - the discussion about the limitations to free speech is very topical, but by no means new. In this seminar, we will examine the regulation of communication beyond the already sufficiently researched censorship by taking a close look at the developments in legal history since the 18th century from a comparative perspective (Austria, selected Italian states (e.g. Tuscany or Piedmont-Sardinia), German states (e.g. Bavaria or Prussia), the German Empire, possibly also France, England and the USA). In doing so, we will also find out about the different objects of protection of such regulations: God (blasphemy), the government / the state and its officials, social peace and security (prohibition of incitement to class hatred or spreading of rumors), or the interests of private individuals.

Presentations, discussion.
