SE 2

Students will acquire knowledge of key concepts and themes in the study of gender and politics as well as theories about the role of gender in politics. They will be provided with empirical facts about how gender matters in contemporary politics. Students will acquire the skills to further develop critical thinking and to critically discuss the relevant literature in the subfields of politics dealing with issues of gender. They will be able to draw conclusions about scientific problems and understand empirical contributions to the field and to formulate innovative research questions in the field of gender and politics.

The content of the course is designed to involve the wide range discussion of the fields of gender and politics. An in depth knowledge about the main streamings of political science and gender research will be transmitted. The category gender will be analysed in interdependency to other categories – ethnicity, class, identity and sexual orientation – with respect to their historical background and their potential of change. The diverse range of political theories as well as the actual political topics with the feminist critique and discourses about them will be questioned with focus on their explicit and implicit gender norms.
