Comprehension of the problematic connection between philosophy, imperialism and colonization since modernity; synopsis of significant texts and contexts of postcolonial philosophy; discussion of the relevance and urgency of "postcolonial turns" for philosophical thought.

To the extent that a number of philosophically modern concepts - such as reason, independence or progress - implicitly or explicitly served to legitimize imperialism and colonization as "civilizing missions" and to discriminate against vast numbers of people as "uncultured foreigners" in the name of the (relatively Eurocentric) Enlightenment, postcolonial critique is also a critique of philosophical thought. This seminar will argue for postcolonial turns of philosophical thought, beginning with Frantz Fanon via Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak to Achille Mbembe, by showing how entangled the relationship between philosophy, imperialism and colonization is since modernity, and what chances there may be to globalize philosophical thought differently.
