608258 SE Contemporary German Literature: From Pop-Literature to the Poetics Lecture
summer semester 2019 | Last update: 06.05.2019 | Place course on memo listThe ability to engage with and reflect critically on the state of research related to a selected topic; proficiency in applying this knowledge to concrete literary-theoretical concerns; experience in analysing texts and discussing them from various literary-theoretical perspectives; the ability to compile a convincing, academically sound presentation of results in a seminar paper.
Christian Kracht counts among the most signifcant and controversial contemporary authors. His texts as well as the author himself seem to consistently provoke irritations. Therefore he was called a popper, a snob, a dandy, high priest of irony, socialist and a nazi. All these contradictory attributions are expressions of an uneasiness which Kracht's texts as well as Kracht's presentation of himself creates. But how can we describe this uneasiness? Which literary structures and forms of presentation are its base?
The course wants to consider these questions and wants to trace Krachts path from notorious pop-snob to his Frankfurt poetics lecture in 2018. A particular attention will be directed towards the univesal structure of his work and to his position in the literary discourse.d.
