Why do so many men write cycles of autobiographical novels?
Why do they have success?
Are there different approaches? What kind of novel cycles find admiration?
Are there any differences in autobiographical writing between languages, cultures, nations (for example in regard to french autobiographical writing: Ernaux, Eribon, Louis)?
What kind of critism do they provoke?
Are gender issues important for answering those questions?
What kind of issues?
Which gender theories can help us analyzing the production, the contents, and the reception of those novels?
This course contains an introduction to Gender Studies. It intention is to enfold gender history and theory by answering the above mentioned questions.
We will therefore focus on both, basics in gender theory and critical masculinity (de Beauvoir, Butler, Connell) and contemporary german literature. We will study the construction of masculinity in fiction and society, especially within the field of literature and arts.

Participiants are obliged to read at least one of the following novels:
