609196 British and/or Postcolonial Literature: African SFF (Science Fiction and Fantasy)
summer semester 2019 | Last update: 24.11.2021 | Place course on memo listThe aim of this course is to explore and dig deeper into this relatively new genre: African SFF (Science Fiction and Fantasy).
We are not only going to analyse novels and short stories, but also movies from that genre. One of the most renowned authors is Nnedi Okorafor with Who Fears Death, Akata Witch, Akata Warrior, Binti, etc. Other texts include Zoo City by Lauren Beukes, Muna Hacha Maive Nei? by Masimba Musodza, Azanian Bridges by Nick Wood, A Stranger in Olondria by Sofia Samatar, Nigerians in Space by Deji Olutokun, Taty Went West by Nikhil Singh, Blackass by Igoni Barrett and the collection A Killing in the Sun by Dilman Dila. Films that we are going to include are Pumzi, a short SFF film, made and released by Wanuri Kahiu from Kenya, District 9 and Black Panther.
