"Here's looking at you, Kid!" Masculinities in the cinema of the sixties (Hollywood, France, Italy and Spain)

The concept of the author cinema is considered as a French invention and goes back to the trend of the Nouvelle Vague which has its beginnings in the 1950s. Directors such as François Truffaut and Jean-Luc Godard are the main representatives of a new cinema which consider themselves as a European countermovement to the US mainstream cinema. The Nouvelle Vague had a significant impact on the European film tradition and also in Hollywood; these film-aesthetical innovations did not pass without leaving a trace.

At the beginning we will work together on the basics of gender, Men’s and Queer Studies and you will be introduced to film theory and analysis. By the example of films from three of the most successful representatives of the classical author cinema, contemporary men constructs will get in the focus: Which models of masculinity can be seen in the movies? How do they confirm, avoid, add or parody well-established images?
