The Representation of Rome in 19th century Italian Literature

a. Historical and cultural background concerning the evolution of the city of Rome during the 19th century.

b. Literary representations of the city of Rome:

1. Rome during the age of Neoclassicism and during Napoleonic occupation

(Vincenzo Monti, Alessandro Verri)

2. The decadence of Rome during the Restauration

(Gioachino Belli, Giacomo Leopardi)

3. Third Rome and the myth of the  Renewal of the nation ("Risorgimento")

(Giuseppe Mazzini, Giosue Carducci)

4. Roma during the property speculation  and the end of the myth of the Renewal  of the Nation ("Risorgimento")

(Giuseppe Mazzini, Giosue Carducci)

(Giuseppe De Roberto, Luigi Pirandello)

Reading and analysis of literary texts. Research starting from text analysis in order to reconstruct the author’s style and the literary current he belongs to.  

1. Oral presentation on a particular theme (Referat) 2. Written exam at the end of the semester (Abschlusstest) 3. Written essay on a certain theme (Proseminararbeit) NB.: The list of the subjects will be published.
