Besides exercising their analytical skills, the participants acquire knowledge about Rome as a film city, about important Italian directors who have treated Rome in their work, as well as about the principal genres of  (Italian) cinema.

After some introductory lessons on the city of Rome, on the fundamental stages of the history of Italian cinema, and on the methodological approaches to be used for the analysis of the films, five films in which the city of Rome acts as protagonist will be treated in an exemplary way.

This is the temporary list from which the films to be examined will be chosen:

  • Rossellini, Roberto: Roma città aperta (1945)
  • Steno: Un americano a Roma (1954)
  • Risi, Dino (reg.): Il sorpasso (1962)
  • Fellini, Federico: La dolce vita (1960)
  • Garrone, Matteo: Terra di mezzo (1996) o Estate romana (2000)
  • Archibugi, Francesca: Questione di cuore (2009)
  • Sorrentino, Paolo: La grande bellezza (2013)
  • Rosi, Gianfranco: Sacro GRA (2013)
  • Castellitto, Sergio: Fortunata (2017)

In the first part of the course, the lectures are given by the teacher and cover a first theoretical approach to the issues. The second part of the course is supported by the students who will delve into topics proposed by the teacher, in reports and presentations.

  1. Active participation in the lessons, including the viewing of all the films treated
  2. Oral report on a specific topic
  3. Written test at the end of the semester
  4. Paper of about 10-12 pages on a specific topic (the list of topics will be published in the second half of the semester)

Will be provided during the semester.
