Developing a basic understanding and specific advanced knowledge of the lecture’s topic

The lecture is dedicated to a field that Jacob Burckhardt called the “exploration of the conditionalities” in art history. From such a perspective, the cooperation between patron and architect is the central determinant of a building’s origin. It shapes the choice of the building type, the spatial program and the building design in equal measure. The lecture raises the question of the persuasive qualities of public representation of authorities and elites through architecture in different social systems––princely states and republics in the pre-modern era, authoritarian or democratic regimes since the modern age.

An overview from the renaissance to the present not only illustrates constant factors and moments of change in the respective roles of client and architect. It also makes clear that architectural patronage is until today an obligatory part of government action.
