622007 PS Contemporary History: Liberation without borders? Transnational histories of decolonisation
summer semester 2019 | Last update: 27.05.2019 | Place course on memo listAcquisition of basic competences in dealing with historical sources and representations on Contemporary History and/or the 20th and 21st century as well as the ability to present the newly-acquired knowledge in oral and/or written form.
The course serves to develop a global historical understanding of decolonisation processes in Africa with a focus on actors engaged in liberation struggles. As already independent states, Egypt, Algeria, Ghana or Tanzania supported the liberation movements within the framework of pan-African solidarity and thus became hubs of transnational networks that reached far beyond the African continent and also had an impact on the host societies themselves. Beyond the continent - to China, Eastern Europe, Western Europe, the USA or Cuba - liberation movements sent members for academic and military training. Civil society solidarity movements in the West (such as the anti-apartheid movement) and state-sponsored solidarity in the state-socialist countries also became part of global decolonization practices.
Interactive learning process: Oral presentations, discussions, written paper.
Course with continuous performance assessment: attendance at all sessions, active participation in discussions, oral presentation and handout, final paper (10 pages).
Literature/reading-list will be discussed in class.
Positive assessment of compulsory module 1
