622015 VO Global History: Militarism in the Arab World
summer semester 2019 | Last update: 10.12.2019 | Place course on memo listThe aim of the course is to show the process of militarization of the arab space by looking at biographies of famous known officers of the past and present, such as Nasser, Sadat, Mubarak, Asad, Qaddafi, Butafliqa or Hassan Al Bashir.
The national movements in the Arab world, which – among other things – was originated from the anti-colonial independence movements, led to the establishment of a middle class, which was associated with the small, domestic armies. From this layer, officers came to power through coup or revolution and then attempted to enlarge and reform the army as their power base. Today these armies are the only functioning institutions in countries such as Egypt, Syria, Algeria, Sudan and Libya. The systematic neglect of the civilian sector has made school throughout the whole area so that the rulers of those kingdoms with insignificant army sectors are trying to base their power on a police and military apparatus.
