Language-Specific Introductory Course in Teaching English

This course accompanies and complements the “Einführung in die Didaktik des Fremdsprachenunterrichts”. The workshop sessions are closely linked with the topics covered in the “Einführung” and exemplify the language-specific practical implementation of the theoretical underpinnings of communicative language teaching.
Aims of this course include:
• experiencing the relationship between principles and practice
• reflecting critically the methodological principles behind language teaching practice
• generating practical ways of implementing principles of language teaching

A series of informal workshops where a range of communicative activities are experienced, the aims behind them analyzed and conclusions drawn. Areas covered include: using visuals/videos/songs and modern media communicatively, generating lesson plans, planning term work, promoting interculturalism and multilingualism, bridging and integrating skills, activating and teaching vocabulary and grammar, motivating pupils, among others.

Trainer-facilitated workshop mode, with English as lingua franca, involving individual tasks, pairwork and group activities. From receptive intake, via critical awareness, towards productive and creative output.

Portfolio to be completed in the course of the term, active participation and homework.

Successful completion of Compulsory Module 5 Bachelor's Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) Subject: English. A requirement for the admission is also the parallel registration for this course and for the course "Introduction to Foreign Language Teaching" ("Einführung in die Didaktik des Fremdsprachenunterrichts") (both part of Compulsory Module 1 “Foundations in Modern Language Teaching and Learning”).

This course is part of Compulsory Module 1 (“Foundations in Modern Language Teaching and Learning”) Bachelor's Programme Secondary School Teacher Training (General Education) Subject: Egnlish.
