The students will acquire basic knowledge of the working methods in numismatics and of historical analysis of the images on the coins. Having attended this course, students should be able to deal with coins from the Roman Empire independently.
The lecture focuses the Roman imperial coins, the vehicle for imperial communications par excellence. An analysis of the messages that Roman emperors spread through their coins, will show the imperial representation and the political programme.
Lecture, discussion of the sources, work in groups, presentation of results.
Presentation of the results of the group work (with handout), participation in the discussion.
Literature will be announced in the course.
