The acquisition of skills in dealing with the main themes and features of ancient historiography as well as the acquisition of skills in dealing with ancient sources and
research literatur.

Xenophons’ exciting narrative on the “Persian Expedition” or "The March of the Ten Thousand" from Babylonia to the Black Sea in the years 401/400 BC. combines various perspectives (military, geographical, ethnographic, literary). In joint source analysis we work out these perspectives, focussing as well on the contemporary historical background and the research literature.

Lecture, guided reading, discussion.

Participation in class, presentation.
