Familiarity with Gorgias' (at first view) unusual style and closer familiarity with Plato’s Greek; critical analysis of the reception of the so called Sophistic movement

Gorgias as an original and serious thinker and stylist; Plato’s tendentious portrait of Gorgias.

We will start with a close reading of the preserved works of Gorgias and will then proceed, by way of contrast, with a close reading of selected passages from the platonic dialogue „Gorgias.“

Regular attendance and oral contributions; end of term paper.

On a special shelf in the library.
