Literary Theory (Readings): Literary Theory in the 20th Century.

The course aims at a profound examination of crucial terms und texts of literary and cultural theorey as well at providing knowledge on traits and methods of the main approaches to literary theory. The course gives an overview on the development of literary criticism in the 20th century and will also take a closer look at some selected critics and their texts. This way the course will cover the time span from the beginning of modern literary theory to contemporary literary theory.

The course is about gaining knowledge on literary theories based on selected texts form a variety of fields such as hermeneutics, reception theory, materialist and marxist theory, constructivism, formalism, structuralism, post structuralism, deconstruction, discourse analysis, new historicism, gender, queer and feminist theories, system theory and so on.

Lecture, extensive reading and discussion, short presentations.

Active participation in the lessons, short presentations, short papers on selected texts, final written exam.
