The students get to know recent positions and debates on the digitalisation of science and are able to position themselves within these debates.

The students learn digital tools and techniques for reference management (e.g. citavi), data analysis (e.g. atlas.ti) and collaboration (e.g. Slack).

The students reflect on their own experiences using digital tools and techniques.

Although conventional technical equipment (paper and pencil) continues to be present in European ethnological research, digital technologies have now entered every facets of research. Literature management programs help with the management of literature and knowledge, Computer Assisted Qualitative Data Analysis Software programs provide techniques for structuring and organizing data and digital tools enable collaboration. Digital storage and analysis tools can be used to organize and understand complex databases and to formulate new questions. The seminar will address the question how digitalisation is transforming research, and which questions and problems arise in particular for ethnographic research.
