Students are acquainted with the principles of Soil Mechanic, Foundation and Tunnel Engineering. The lectures address the basics required to unterstand the applications (e.g. the guided works, part 1 and part2).

• Formations and composition of soils, soil groups
• soil classification, grain size distribution, index tests
• groundwater, percolation, pemeability, capillarity
• percolation, potential theory, frost heave
• stresses in soil, effective stress, pore pressure, Mohr-circles, stress fields
• settlements
• consolidation
• shear strengt, dict shear test, triaxial test
• earth pressure
• bearing capacity, hydraulic failure
• slopes • shallow foundations
• pile foundations
• underground amelioration (replacement, compaction, pre-loading, grouting, freezing)
• groundwater containment
• retaining structures

Presentation of theory in a concise and clear way. The transparencies used are available to the students via VIS-Online

oral examination after passing the guided works
